What Is a MagSafe Phone Case?
Phone cases have somehow become more complicated than the phones themselves. Somewhere between dual-layer protection, wireless charging, and MagSafe compatibility, it’s easy to end up wondering what any of it actually means.
If you’ve seen terms like MagSafe phone case or magnetic phone case and wondered whether you actually need a case with that strange white ring on the back, here’s a simple breakdown of what MagSafe is, why some phone cases include a magnetic ring, and why others don’t always need one.
What Does MagSafe Mean?
Apple originally introduced MagSafe in 2006 alongside the first-generation MacBook Pro as a magnetic charging connector designed to disconnect safely if the cable was pulled accidentally.
Years later, the MagSafe name was brought back with the iPhone 12 series- this time as a magnetic wireless charging system designed to help chargers and accessories connect magnetically to the back of your phone.
Today, when people talk about a MagSafe phone case or magnetic phone case, they’re usually referring to iPhone cases designed to support this magnetic connection system, usually with a ring of magnets that helps align your phone perfectly to the magnetic accessories or charger.
Why Do Some Phone Cases Have a Magnetic Ring?
The magnetic ring is added to strengthen the magnetic connection between your phone and MagSafe accessories, especially if the phone case is made from thicker material or has multi-layer protection, such as our tough cases, which can affect and weaken the magnetic signal.
That is why some cases have built-in magnetic ring that helps improve magnetic alignment and keep wireless charging more reliable.
The Tough Phone Cases at Dessi Designs are made with dual-layer protection that consists of shock-absorbing TPU inner layer and a durable hard outer shell.
That extra protection is great for everyday drops and bumps, but the thicker construction weakens the magnetic connection. Dessi Designs tough phone cases include MagSafe compatibility automatically for supported iPhone models (iPhone 12 mini and newer) to help strengthen the connection and keep magnetic charging working smoothly.
Many newer Samsung phones also support wireless charging functionality (including Samsung Galaxy S22 models and newer), so where possible at Dessi Designs we automatically include it in your order without charging extra for it.

MagSafe vs Wireless Charging — What’s the Difference?
This is where a lot of the confusion comes from.
Wireless Charging
Means your phone can charge without plugging in a cable.
MagSafe
Has magnets that help align the charger and create a stronger magnetic connection with magnetic accessories.
A case can support wireless charging without containing MagSafe magnets.
Why Dessi Designs Hard Plastic Cases Don’t Need It
The slim Hard Plastic Phone Cases offered at Dessi Design work a little differently.
The thinner and lighter material supports wireless charging naturally. So while they aren’t technically “MagSafe reinforced,” they are still work with wireless charging.
